Humanism In Action

A friend of my mother’s has a great project: she makes care packages for the homeless, keeps them in her car, and gives them to those in need. I work in Venice, California, with a vast population of underprivileged individuals. I was so inspired by her project that I undertook my own. I am posting this here in the hope that we can brainstorm together about what would work best in these packs, and maybe generate a good name for the project in the process.

Here is a picture from the first round I’ve assembled:

Each pack comprises:

  • sardines in a pop-top can
  • almonds
  • raisins
  • a granola bar
  • cheese and crackers
  • toothbrush and toothpaste
  • breath mints
  • analgesics
  • a phone card
  • safety pins

Each pack costs about $5 to assemble.

I ask “Sir/Ma’am, are you hungry?”

Reactions have ranged from a desperate, wordless grab for the bag to a sober and somber response of “Yes, I am hungry. Thank you very much.”

Please brainstorm with me — and consider starting your own project.
